wild and wacky airbnb's
Of course for our first experience with airbnb we choose the craziest properties! I had never used the service but heard great things and during our recent trip we were using airbnb as a way to not pay $400 a night to stay in a hotel but also to make the trip really memorable. I knew we wanted to stay halfway between Ohio and Vermont, so we decided a tent in the Finger Lakes of NY would be the most fun! Read below to see where we stayed in a Boston, MA airbnb.
New York Altitude Tent - $40 plus the cleaning fee - link here
This was about 6 hours from our house and in the town of Ovid, NY. It was a very small town and to find the property we were in a housing development right next to a prison. We pull up to the end of the road and there is no sign or anything, just a giant berry farm and a trailer home. We finally figured out that we are actually camping in the back property of some guy's house! The guy and his Great Pyrenees dog led us on their bike about a mile back on their land to the campsite. It was up on a peninsula where 3 creeks came together and so gorgeous! He had everything we could possibly need for camping and even offered to bring us farm fresh eggs for breakfast.
We got a late start on the day so we didn't get to the site until 4:30 and we only had a couple hours to make dinner and get set up before it got pitch black. We hiked around his gorgeous property!
The altitude tent was amazing and we would stay in one again in a heartbeat. It was like sleeping in a giant hammock and we didn't get too cold. We woke up to a rooster crowing!
Boston - House Boat - $229 - link here
Boston hotels are so expensive! Actually the whole city is expensive and every time we went out to eat our bill was well over $100. I was so happy I found this houseboat to stay on. It was in the North End and so close and walkable to everything. My worst fear was that I would get seasick because I usually get seasick just sitting on a dock but somehow I was fine. It was more of a gentle rocking and we were usually sitting on the dock instead of in the boat when we were home. We loved the view! This was such a cool experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat. It was crazy to come back to our boat at night and have the whole harbor be about 10 ft higher than it was when we left in the afternoon from the tide. You can see in the picture below how small the whole house was, but it didn't matter because we were out exploring Boston. Fun fact, I ran straight into the glass door leaving the boat to go get my wine on the dock. Zach laughed so hard!
I could have sat on this dock all day!
We loved wandering the streets of Boston and the Italian village was our favorite area.
I could have walked up and down these docks all night! They said almost all of the boats in this harbor were people's boats that they lived on!
Where to eat! We had dinner at Mare Oyster bar which was absolutely divine. I had the swordfish. We had lunch at a cute little deli in the Italian district, I can't remember the name.
We stopped at City Winery for a drink in the afternoon and the atmosphere was perfect.
Get a cannoli at Mike's Pastry! They had so many different flavors and the line was out the door.
Right behind this Boston wall was an adorable rooftop bar!
Overall we were so happy we decided to stay in two crazy airbnb's instead of paying $200-$400 for a hotel room. It made the experience so much more fun and they will be great stories to tell!
